All 3 were manual focus. The G9 would not auto focus worth a damn against that white background.
call me old school but I rarely use auto-focus.
Like in your case you needed to have a specific subject/object in focus and cameras don't know what you want most of the times. Futzing around to get the focus point in the viewfinder where I desire and I might as well turn that focus ring manually and be done...
For generic deep DOF images (wide angle or high f-stop) it doesn't matter, but shallow DOF where one want to isolate the subject, that is a different story.
Well done

September marks my annual migration with the boat from northern Lake Michigan to lower Lake Huron for it's winter storage. These are a few from that trip this year...

The oldest lighthouse (now abandoned) on the Great Lakes, Waugoshance Light, completely surrounded by water, marks the eastward turn down the Straits of Mackinaw from northern Lake Michigan. In the distance one of the towers of the Mackinaw Bridge is visible 18 miles away.

Old Presque Lighthouse, a haunted relic of days past draws tourists from all over that listen to the stories of how mariners still see it's beacon on occasion despite the light having been removed decades ago. Here a lake freighter passes outside the shoal it marks on it's way to a call in Rogers City on Lake Huron.

An old ChrisCraft woody forms a singular yet impressive parade around the flat water of Round lake in the City of Charlevoix on a chilly Michigan afternoon.

Finally, the sun sets on my 5 for September with a shot of the sun dipping behind the clouds in Presque Isle. It seems the clouds offer just enough filtering to spot what appears to be smoke from the California wildfires dance just above and below the sun.

...and that's the rest of the story...Good day!

Got about a bit more in September, apart from the eye shot, none of this month's macros were taken at home!

How did you get that much of the eye in focus at f/2.8?!?

Gorgeous shot!
Thanks @gwydionjhr , much appreciated.

Not entirely sure how I managed it, tried more DOF but didn’t like the shots (wrong eye shape). There’s quite a bit of PP work to get some of it sharp, but I’m pretty happy with it... and it did well in a recent club comp taking 3rd place on the theme ‘Circles, Curves and Curls’.

I’m definitely going to have another go at retaking with more DOF to try and get more eyelashes in focus, but getting the correct eye shape is going to be difficult, especially when I’ve got to convince my daughter to sit again to take the shots.
