Leaving on Sept 10, we spent 5 days camping and hiking in the Mammoth Lakes region of the Eastern Sierra Mountains. Autumn is definitely in the air and the leaves are just beginning to change. The deer and the bears have come down from the higher elevations seeking food and warmth. In fact we had a bear in camp who made a visit to our drink cooler...he does not like diet soda! A quick chase and he was on his way to better food.

Camping at Twin Lakes put us in close proximity to Yosemite National Park and a number of other area's to discover and explore. Twin Lakes our home away from home.

I planned an afternoon trip to Yosemite to try and get some late afternoon to early evening pictures of some of my favorite places. Here's a few. I used both my new Panasonic LX5 and the Panasonic GF1 with my new Olympus 9-18mm lens. Lembert Dome from Tuolumme Meadows

Lots more pics on my Flickr link below. We had a great time and I got to use both camera's. The GF1 around my neck and the LX5 in my jacket pocket. I am very pleased with the results of both. Thanks for looking! Feel free to post your comments good/bad or indifferent.

Beautiful. The bear is impressive ; not sure I would hike where encountering this kind of beast is possible. But maybe it's out of ignorance not knowing how to deal with them.

Karen, thanks so much - and now I know where you've been! Glorious country and it's on my list of places to visit. The scenery is so beautiful it almost doesn't look real!

I'm with you Mauve regarding that bear or any other bears. Once our dogs treed a "baby" bear who must have weighed about 150 lbs or so...all unplanned. We were living in the country and were fairly clueless...but got the three Shetland Sheepdogs back inside pretty quickly. Those bears can run awfully fast.

Karen, again thank you and I will definitely be perusing your Flickr photos for more scenic wonders.

The bear was in camp at least 3 times while we were there. I've never encountered one before that close, but the thing with bears is make a lot of noise. Never ever ever get between a momma bear and her "cute" little cubs..a mistake many people make. Like all good mothers she'll protect her baby's and in the case of a bear that means lots of pain.

The bear in the pic above came into camp around 8am thinking he was invited to breakfast. Everyone had their bear lockers open and were preparing bacon/eggs/pancakes etc. The bear must have thought it was an open invitation to dine..he came right into the camp site right behind ours and headed straight to the open locker. Everyone around started screaming "Bear" Bear and a quick thinking camper threw a rock at the locker..made of metal..the loud thud was enough to send the bear running.

Me, Hannah and Matt in close pursuit...had to get the pic of our morning visitor. No danger..the bear was headed away from us and in a hurry!

Karen,
I love the gentle way you see. The images show a side of you that shares a sweet innocence of your vision.
Thanks... Don

Lovely photos of a fantastic place. All these years and I still haven't seen a bear. I have the worst luck :)

Great series. Wonderful colors. It looks like the sound of silence.
With an encounter of the first kind all inclusive.
