A four-second kerfuffle. I was alerted by a lot of agitated conversation amongst the goosey set.

The bird at center has just landed and is making clear that this patch of water ain't big enough for the both of 'em.

You ain't listenin' so good, feller... (the chase is on & a look of alarm spreads on the offender's face. It's interesting how the focus has shifted between the two heads in these two frames.)

(Here's an interesting AF fail. The plane of focus is clearly behind both birds - note the tussock in the water on the left. The tail feathers on the chasing bird are close to the plane of focus.)

Git out!!! (This is the subsequent frame and may be a new pump on the shutter. The AF has shifted to the chasing bird's head.)

Elapsed time, four seconds. My adrenalin levels probably matched those of the geese...

Shot with 5-box AF target, low silent. Given the amount of superfluous detail in the scene, I'm pleased the sequence came out as well as it did.

I have been keeping an eye on two nearby heron nests. The herons have been brooding and every once in a while the resident adult will pop up and rearrange something - the eggs, poorly placed nesting material, one can't be certain.

From the lack of visits of the mate, it has become pretty clear that they must take turns at brooding and hunting. A day or two ago I noticed a heron flying toward the nests and decided to practice BIF, even though it would be a butt shot.

Turns out it was probably croaking, "Honey, I'm home." What I got to witness was the changing of the guard. Accommodating two large birds on the postage-stamp-sized nest with eggs is no mean feat with both of them stationary. Add a landing and the scope for mishap widens, or so it would seem. In the viewfinder I only saw a lot of flapping wings.
Flare for landing. From this point on, the elapsed time of the series is sixteen seconds.

Really close - in fact, using the mate as a landing pad. Note the left foot is already on the far side of the standing bird, which is flexing its legs to take the weight.

Things get a mite chaotic at this point. Keep track of the progress of the landing bird's right leg.

Is this according to plan? The lower bird rises, thus forcing the landing bird to straddle it.

The landing bird starts to fold its wings. How long will they stay together on the nest?

I found this eastern box turtle walking through our backyard. We think it was on a journey to lay eggs.

Great thread, don't remember visiting before but at least haven't seen in a while.

Follows a few wild life from the parks in Rio de Janeiro.
