    Great set Gary.

I always enjoy chiaroscuro done well... #7 is particularly striking and I like #3 and #4 a lot also. Good stuff, I'm sure the kids must love your photos

I had to look up "chiaroscuro" . I look for drama and impact ... I found harsh lighting provides the drama and impact I seek. High school kids with spot light = chiaroscuro. Trouble with harsh lighting is that most of your shots suck.

    It's all about the kids.

Thanks mpresley. I really like #8, that kid was expressionless and I was having a really tough time getting something worth keeping, then he was hit with the spot and it all came together.

I tried to take some photos @ UNM's HopeJoy hall of some simply fantastic Odissi Indian (dot not feather) dancing using the lx7. No flash, on the third row and got nothing but sh&t from people ( I'm sorry but that's very disturbing). And it was permitted. This is why I live in the middle of nowhere, people have inflated views of themselves! Nice Job BTW.

It's just you have that " untouchable air" about you. I lived in San Diego for years. Oh and check out the "How You got your Nickname" thread for my story of Juan Grande.

First off, great work, Gary! I really love #7. I probably would've tried to crop that image tight on the dancer in a portrait orientation which would have stripped out all the drama that all the black space provides.

I looked up chiaroscuro myself after reading Jay's comment. I'd never heard that term before. The odd thing is the term came up in a podcast I was listening to yesterday afternoon (after I'd read this thread and looked it up) in reference to the work of Caravaggio. Who knew that mu-43 forum was educational.

    LOL.

I learned the term originally from The Photographer's Eye and it just came up reading my copy of The A-Z of Creative Photography also, so it was fresh in my mind. I like it because it's one word shorthand for an artistic concept. Of course, Gary said pretty much the same thing with one word "drama" that doesn't require a photography dictionary

I remember your story, the locals wanted to make sure you paid your tab, lol. Where was that good surfing? Coastal SoCal, from SD to SB is the pits for getting around. The freeways are so heavily impacted, it has become insane to drive anywhere. Welcome to the future. If I didn't love the perfect weather, the perfect coasts, the perfect mountains, the perfect deserts, the perfect forests, the perfect wines, et al ... I'd move to NM also.
