Hi all, I am looking for a travel zoom for my OM-D. I normally use the excellent primes, but for travel I would like the versatility of a zoom. I am saving up for the 12-35mm, but until then I need a temporary zoom solution. I have heard a lot of people like the Panasonic 14-42mm ASPH (not the power zoom version). How does it compare to the Olympus 14-42? I have tried a friend's 12-50mm and wasn't impressed.

Don't be too quick to dismiss the power-zoom version. As long as you don't get one of the early versions with the blurring issue, it is actually a decent little performer. Nothing beats it for compactness in travel. In many cases, I found the IQ to be better than my standard 14-42mm. There are a few little nuances (e.g., a poster here pointed out that it seems to be sharper wide open at 40mm than 42mm, which I've have since verified. It's not a big difference, but worth that little bump down from 42mm.)

That said, since you are considering the 12-35mm, size can't be that much of a concern for you, so the Panny 14-45mm would be my next choice. However, I should point out that I have never used it on an Oly body, so I'm not sure if there is anything that is not corrected on them, like there is with the 12-35mm.

I'd say your best bet would be the 12-35 but if you want the 14-42 kit lens ill sell you mine for a nice price!

Thanks guys, I found a mint 14-45 today for a very decent price, so I ordered that one. I should be able to reclaim my money by selling it when I am closer to having the money for a 12-35.
