Not just on this forum, but in general, where are all of the women photographers?

Why is this art form seemingly male dominated?

Some of my favorite photographers are women. To me, they bring a completely different perspective to the craft.

Then again, I wonder if that is really true? In other words, would I be able to tell if a man or woman shot a particular photo?

I agree with you Rick - a lot of my favorite photographers are women. I don't know that I could necessarily pick which sex shot which photo, but the energy and perspective having more women's input can only be a good thing.

But in terms of forums like this, I think MOST women (obviously there are exceptions) are less gear obsessed (or even interested) than MOST guys. And while there's some really nice photography that makes it to the walls around here, it primarily a gear forum. There seem to be more women over on Serious Compacts, which is one of Amin's other sites and with a much broader spectrum of gear - hence a bit more emphasis on the photos...

Women have better things to do instead of being on camera forums. They're actually out shooting!

I teach photography and the majority of my students are woman.

I judge competitive photography and the majority of competitors are not woman.

I can't tell the gender of the photographer from the photograph.

Maybe it's not that the women aren't among the shooters, it's that women are not on these kinds of forums.

(I'm a woman, but I consider myself to be a bit of an oddball.)

They don't want to be on a forum with so many grumpy old guys.

    Looking at "EP-3, 12mm, 17mm, 14/42mm, 40/150, 75/300" I'm not sure it's women who have been out shopping

I think women are more serious than men. Even if we are adults we act a little bit like children withy toys: the only difference is that our toys are cameras and lenses and debates on which one is better, huger, better performers etc.

Well women just take cameras for what they are: photographic machinery.

Well on the downsides I think they miss a lot of fun:smile::smile:

I too must be an oddball female because I am a total and complete gadget freak (first)....who happens to be a hobbyist photographer (second). I love all things gadgety and research each and every purchase to death. I am also trying to learn all things photography related. I don't profess to have any photographic talent (unlike most who post to this forum)....just a desire to improve. I don't speak for any female other than myself, but the reason you won't find me posting much is because I photograph primarily for my own enjoyment. I don't have the need to share or the need for approval. But more than that, I am simply not much of a social creature by nature.

Yet I am here, reading and researching nearly every day. A lurker by nature....who was so impressed with the forum, that she happened to have registered.

I sincerely appreciate all who do actively contribute. I have a great respect for many of you.

Doing something for his/hers enjoyment is the baseline of passion and hobby. After you can share with others and maybe become a little bit more of a social creature.

Actually aren't women supposed to be the indecisive ones? Strangely enough this forum is full of indecisive men who don't know what camera/lenses to get, I usually know that pretty quickly!

See, women just know what they want and they go out and get it and don't need to talk about it all day long while the men can't make their minds up. There you go, I've just thrown my own bit of generalisation into the mix! Honestly, just ask your wife what to get, she knows best. Now you can use all the time you'd otherwise spend on photography forums and looking at lens comparison charts and clean the house instead!
