I played around with several nifty-50s, my favorite hands-down was the Pentax SMC Takumar 50/1.4 (m42 screwmount). Loved the physical feel of the lens and focusing action, quite sharp once stopped down a bit, lovely rendering especially for monochrome. I kind of wish I hadn't sold it but AF is so convenient...

MC Rokkor 58mm/1.2 using a Minolta Extension Tube from their 50mm/3.5 Macro (another nice lens) and the Lens Turbo 2:

I have owned about 7 of the OM 50's (mostly f1.4s, a two 1.8s.. Sample variation is all over the place. Some have been really bad, two were real gems. I kept the best one.

I have owned about 10 Canon FD 50s. These were much more consistent. Especially the NewFD lenses. These were no better than the best OM 50 but much better on average.

Point is, I agree with the sample variation issue with the OM 50's.

That's why I don't have any OM lenses anymore. While the Canon, Minolta, Konica lenses aren't necessarily better...they're no worse either. My experience has been that you can find a really nice fast 50 for not much money and be more likely to get a good copy with other brands than with OMs. If you fund a good copy of an OM hold on to it because they are excellent, but so are a lot of other lenses out there as well.

This month's favorite seems to be an adapted projection lens: Bell&Howell 2" f1.6 made for 16mm cine :inlove:
I think of it as my cheap Peztval ;)
Here adapted for testing on bellows but I have since rehoused in a body of a dead SLR lens for finer focusing capabilities

Who knows if my "new love" will be replaced by a more exciting and slimmer black model that has just entered the household: a Pentax-110 70mm f2.8
I do however have fond memories of the relationship with my Trioplan 50mm f2.9, and occasionally we still see each other :flowers_2:

I agree. I am finding the SMC 50/1.4 to be remarkably similar to the Super Takumar 50/1.4 (except K mount)

My favourite adapted lens is the Tamron Adaptall 90/2.5. It is versatile, sharp and has a lovely bokeh. I would say that I use it for maybe....70-75% of all my photos. I just wish I had the 1:1 converter too.

That is easy. My Olympus ZD 150mm f/2.0 which also happens to be my favorite lens ever.

After owning 5! of the 1.4 Nifty 50s over the past year (Canon SSC, Super Takumar, Minolta MD, Silvernose OM , MC Rokkor 58) I'd say my favorite also goes to your pick, Vincent - the MD 50mm f1.4. For what it's worth I found almost none of them very usable wide open at 1.4. FYI, I've been a big fan of your work over the past few years, Vincent!

BUT after very recently picking up an OM 100 2.8 the MD 50 is now in danger of being bumped to #2.

...Not to mention I'm picking up a Series 1 Vivitar 90 2.5 from a fellow forum member that should be here by the end of the week....MD and OM beware.

Here is a MD shot from last year:

And a very recent OM 100 shot (wide open at 2.8!):

well it was my OM50f1.8 but somehow its been replaced effectively with the Oly45f1.7
So now its probably my nFD200f4

:)

I just picked up some OM lenses locally on a CL impulse-buy, including the OM 50/1.8. Initial opinion is that I like it a lot more than the FD 50/1.4 I have, and it's tiny. I have to admit though, watching a couple O45's go by in the classifieds for ~$200 makes me start to wonder whether legacy 50's really have much point, but then I start to think about a focal reducer and how the system doesn't really have a 35/1.4 (or 35/1.0) equivalent in native glass, plus that nagging feeling that the OM glass does seem to render differently. More time needed.

What I did get that I'm having a lot of fun with is an OM 135/2.8. Quite small and light for the length, and I'm discovering that I think I like long lenses with decent-ish aperture. Mostly just pet and random-stuff-in-the-yard shots so far, though. The problem is that I'm beginning to think this is really telling me I need the O75 (and/or what a reducer to make it a 100/2.0 would be like).

Hi

I came to a similar conclusion.

in my view ...: fifties - FD 1.4 compared to OM 1.8

so far I've never felt that f1.4 brought anything to my table with either of those lenses but the FD501.4 sure feels heavier.

More time needed.

well since I bought my O45f1.7 I've not pulled my legacy 50's out. I preferred my OM50f1.8 for handling when using my GH but turned to the Pentax110-50 for my GF for compactness. Now the O45f1.7 does both better :)

I keep my OM50 (and my FD too) because is is (they are) worth nothing to sell and because the OM50 works well as a macro with extension tubes (and AF brings little to the table there).

We each learn best by doing. I've certainly bought and used lenses to see if I like them or if they are going to be as effective as I need. Many have been sold. I tend to think of telephoto lenses (anything from 45 and up) these days in terms of working distance. Meaning will I be able to get closer to frame or must I stay a bit further back. If you need to work further back then the 70 length works well.

Most of my adopted lens are Minolta MC/MD mount. My favorite of those is surprisingly the 50mm 1.7, I prefer it to the 45mm 2.0 and the 58mm 1.4 that many love (maybe my copy is not that great). I also prefer my 200mm 3.5 over my 135mm 2.8. I also have a 28mm 2.8 - it is a len that frustrates me, I get a lot of crappy images with it, but every once in a while there is one that I just love.

Here are a couple from the MD 50mm 1.7

My Lester Dine 105,2.8 macro. It's like a fine, precision instrument and a joy to use.

I should probably sell it though as I just don't use it so much and it should be out to use. Would break my heart.
