I used to use .mac/mobile me for sharing pictures with family and friends, because it was easy for them to download individual pictures or a whole set, and they didn't need an account to do it. Apple is shutting that down, and I haven't found an alternative that I like. I've been experimenting with flickr, but you can't (I think) download a whole set at once -- only photo by photo -- and to download a photo requires navigating through some not-so-obvious steps, which requires complicated directions.

I was just checking out smugmug using their free trial, but it's not much help so far as allowing downloads. That seems reserved for the pro level ($20/month)?

What's my best alternative? I don't mind paying, but not $20/month. THanks.

I'm interested in this, too, as a former mobileme member. I now use smugmug, with a "power level" subscription. Smugmug has the simplest, least cluttered, interface I could find (Flickr's interface seemed to me like something from 1995), but I just checked and I don't see an option to download an entire gallery with a click.

Wow, I've never heard of any service that offers full album download.

If the DOWNLOADING part is more important than the viewing/gallery part, you could put things in a Dropbox public folder.

There's a round about way of doing this. I've pushed for smugmug users to vote on that but it hasn't gained too much traction.

As the account owner, you do have the option to download a full album at a time. Clicking so will tell smugmug to generate a zip file to download. They email you when it's ready to use. I believe it has a live time of 2 weeks or something? I'm not sure if there are any bandwidth limits.

But I do this to share w/ family. It's at most 2-3 folks that will pull it, if that. But it works.

I do not know if this is available on the lower end accounts as I have a pro account, but figured I'd throw it out there

I just checked out ZangZing, opened a free account and imported a gallery from my smugmug account. There is, indeed, a button to download the whole gallery. It's under the "i" link at the bottom of the gallery thumbnail.

Okay, I can find no way to delete the ZangZing account. I emailed the site for assistance. If you're okay with that, go for it, but I find it shady and frustrating. It was very easy to create the free trial account . . .

Hmm. Zangzing looks promising, especially if they can work up an aperture plug-in. I don't get a shady vibe at first glance. More like a start-up vibe, which has its own risks.

Yeah, I don't get a shady vibe either. It does look like a reasonable mobileme alternative. But not including an easy option to delete an account is surely a conscious choice. I'm not the first person whose wanted to opt out. Unless I'm missing something, they've chosen to require you to email them in order to opt out. Some people are probably okay with that, but I don't like it.

I started working backwards, so to speak, checking out aperture plug-ins. How about phanfare, which seems to allow for full album downloads, but it's not clear at what pricing level (there are three levels). Anyone using phanfare?

phanfare looks good. Nice interface, seems intuitive. Easy download of singles or whole albums, available at the basic price level. Aperture plug-in.

Something you might want to consider are the terms of use.

I made an extensive research last year about possible services, but found that every each photo sharing service had something like this (a modified extract from Phanphare's terms of use):

As I do street photography, and might also consider some provocative photography in the future, it's not a greatly far fetched idea that someone out there on the internet gets pissed off about my photos and sues the company hosting my pictures.
According to such terms of use as above, it would mean a BIG bill for me.
(given the fact that I'm not living in the US, it would likely be very hard to enforce the case on me, but I certainly do not want to take a chance)

So, what I did was use a local small ISP whose terms have no such clauses, but just a fair deal "you give us money, we give your diskspace, just don't put online illegal copies or porn".
I had to set up the gallery software myself, though.

I posted earlier in this thread about setting up a trial account with zinging in order to see if it seems at all like mobileme, and then not being able to delete my account. Just to followup, I emailed them asking if I missed something or, if not, that they delete my account. I just received this response:

    "Hi, Vincent.

Thanks for using ZangZing. I'm sorry that you had difficulty with ZangZing. You can always refer to our help forum or you can refer to our Getting Started Guide at Getting Started - Group Photo Sharing - ZangZing.

To delete your account, we haven't set it up where an individual user can do it. However, we can delete all of your information at any time. Would you like me to do this for you? We would delete the ZangZing account, 'vreusch'.

    Please let me know."

I'm not suggesting that there's anything wrong with their product. And maybe some people are okay with the practice of making an account setup easy, but denying the user the ability to delete the account. I just find it pretty pushy and pretty lame. I suggested that they may want to rethink that one.

Well, they're responsive. Account deleted. This time they said that they do intend to add self-deleting, but that they don't currently do it for "technical reasons." I know nothing about creating websites, so I'm not going to judge. Could be true.

The technicality is the more account holders the higher they can charge advertisers.

    Download them all
SmugMuggers have the option to get a zip file of all photos, videos and archives in their galleries. Look for the Download All option under the gallery Tools menu.
