On a whim I bought a (very cheap) GX1 in an Amazon lightning deal, liked it but didn't really use it. I used it to take some street stuff and other shots.

I was going to eBay it when I came across a blog post about an IR converted GX1. My blog post about all of this is here: Panasonic GX1 and Infrared « sgoldswoblog

Essentially I shall be keeping it and having it converted for IR photography.

    Love my GX1

I have been taking out my GX1 a lot recently. I like to trade off between my G5 and my GX1.

The images you posted look very nice. I sure hate to see you convert it but, I suppose it was inexpensive and you may like the IR stuff.

used bodies crop in value so fast it makes my head spin. Sell it fast before you lose another $50 in value or before you spend a few hundred for a super limited use conversion.

Hopefully you'll find plenty of opportunity to use it for what it's costing you.

I bought a ready converted camera from someone called Infraready on eBay and I've used it maybe twice. I think I bought it about 5 months ago too and I'm thinking of selling it soon. Fortunately it was just a cheap Canon Powershot so wasn't really a massive outlay

Thanks Dan. I have a GH3 that I've been using as my main M43s camera but I also own an E-M5. Despite what people might think they are very complimentary.

I liked the GX1 a lot but it became a bit of a "house" camera (it doesn't do its best work in the winter murk that persists in the UK, where it is a bit noisy even at base ISO) and I would have wanted a camera with an integrated VF to use it more. I am very interested in both B&W and landscape photography so to me it was an obvious way to get some use out of a camera I bought relatively cheaply and would otherwise have sold.

That's a pity. Fortunately I love my landscape photography and I've recently become really interested in IR work.

I figure I can slip the GX1 into my backpack when I take out my GH3 for visible light work to get some (extreme) contrasts and share lenses. Ah well, I will report how it goes!

For me I'm not sure it would be limited use - but I agree with you that if I didn't have a purpose in mind for it it could become an expensive fool's errand.

Toss a pancake on it and leave it on like a fixed lens. Then take it with you every time you walk out the door without your "serious" cameras.
