i got a lens that doesn't seem to focus at distances, and the guy who sold it to me tells me it's a CS lens but doesn't know much about it. the adapter i'm using on my camera is a standard C to m4/3 adapter. is there something i could add to the mix - a second adapter, rings or a shim - to make this work?

You will need to grind the adapter or the lens itself.

huh... why grind it? the lens fits the adapter and the ring i have just fine - it just that when i use it i can take pics about... er... half an inch away.

taken at f/1.3 in a dark room at less than an inch away, only the monster's teeth are in focus :D

The distance between the sensor and the lens is too long, basically what you made is a macro tube lens, you need to make that distance a lot shorter. Shims will just make your focal point closer.
