Last night I had an interesting discussion with three other photographers. Between the four of us we had two serious camera enthusiasts, one wedding photographer and one sports photographer. Two Canon shooters, one LUMIX and one Olympus. Combined, about 95 years of photo experience, all having started out with film. I expected this to be a debate on which camera is better and why, but it never went in that direction.
Somehow, we all quickly agreed that today more photographers seem to be more concerned with having the latest or fastest technology, and always waiting for newer technology now in development. We also agreed that many people feel buying a more advanced camera would make them a better photographer, a belief that often does just the opposite once they discover they didn’t understand all the advanced features.
One of the group members suggested, “if we took 5 photographers and gave each one two different brand cameras, say Oly and LUMIX, no one would be able to identify which camera took each picture". Each photographer’s work would differ according to each shooting style and post processing preferences. By the 3rd beer no one disagreed that better photos are the result of the photographer, and not necessarily the camera.
Just curious how you all feel about this topic? Are you addicted to having the latest technology, or are you focused on being a better photographer by learning how to more effectively use your camera and increasing your knowledge of photographic fundamentals?
