Hi all,

basing this on this thread and some thoughts I had therein: https://www.mu-43.com/threads/almost-gave-up-on-photography.110682/

Short version: The pandemic has completely ruined my enthusiasm for photography. A weekly photo challenge with like-minded shooters would be a good motivator to make some pictures.

The parameters would be: Assignments should be do-able from home or nearby. You have everything you need to do the assignment (i.e., no going out and buying new gear, use what you have available). Assignments should encourage photography and experimentation / creativity. It's a fun thing and not too serious! This is an activity I've done before when taking a couple of photography workshops and it's fun to see how people interpret these types of assignments and put their own spin on them.

There will be no judging of completed projects, but positive comments are encouraged.

Examples of assignments (just random, off the top of my head):
  • Tiny worlds (macro)
  • Abstract Lights
  • Curves and Lines
If there are a few people willing to give this a go, sign up via the attached poll and next week, I will come up with a few "assignments" for people to choose from, myself included. Next week, another member comes up with the assignments, and so on.

This was a concern when I wrote this post: There are probably long-running groups here that have similar challenges / assignments or whatever you'd like to call them.

My first thought looking at your quoted thread would be, "these are very literal" (of the examples I viewed). E.g., Lightbulb, Headphones, Mirror, ... I was thinking in looser, more abstract terms. I'd probably suggest something more like, "Shoot the light", "Take a picture of sound", "Reflection".

So, similar, but maybe, hopefully different?

I'm a 'maybe' because I'm lousy at being involved in any type of structured behaviour. However, I'm willing to give it a try.

Awesome! I'm not great at following rules either, but I am good at meeting obligations. I took a couple of photography workshops years ago and our mentor gave us these types of assignments and they were really educational. Having a set of constraints or limitations is a surprisingly effective way at inspiring creativity.

in 24 hours this post has had two responses and one vote of "maybe", so it's not a great turn out so far. On the plus side, I did get out and make some panning shots I didn't hate last night.

I think the idea is great and I am sure I would benefit from the challenges, but there is a reason I havent participated in any of the ongoing challenges/Assignments and that's because I would never get around to do the assignment, I would feel bad and then I would do one because of guilt.

But I would love it if I had the time and the self motivation.

I like the concept. Similar to the weekly photo challenge, but a bit more open-ended. But I know myself well enough to doubt whether I would actually complete the assignments on a regular basis.

We've done it before, and it can be fun, just don't apply too many constraints.

52 weeks in 2019 | Mu-43 (mu-43.com)

Some things that come to mind: Don't be too rigorous with the schedule, allow people to play catch-up if needed. Keep in mind that not everyone has the same gear, so stay away from topics that require things like studio lighting, etc. Don't require a sign up. We had people come and go, only a handful of us finished the year, and that was fine too. The fun was in seeing how people interpreted the assignment. Mountain did a fantastic job of posting the new challenge for the week. The only real rule was that the photo was supposed to be made after you saw the challenge, but even that was broken a few times. If you peruse the thread you'll see how it progressed.

As for being like the other current challenge, I don't see how that matters at all. There are forums like Dyxum that run multiple contests/challenges simultaneously. Some join one, some another, some all.

great comments, all.

@Brownie the gear limits were very much on my mind as well, so I'll try to be respectful of that. I very much want it to be a thing anyone can do with whatever gear they have on hand.

And yeah, being very liberal with people's commitments is totally important. If people don't have the time to commit one week or another, they're more than welcome to come back when they can. No problems there.

I'll take a look at Mountain's challenges and see what we had there.

One technical question: If we do this, should we lump everything into a single thread or do a new thread each week for each assignment? I might borrow the "Challenge" moniker going forward too. It sounds more fun and less like homework. :)

I'll check back this weekend! Later, all!

I'll say yes, but like @John King I really mean that I'll try but no guarantees. My problem generally isn't the picture taking, it's the uploading. I had a decent record last winter and spring, but when summer came around we got busy buying and selling a house (downsizing now that the kids have moved out) and I got out of the routine. Maybe something like this will get me back into a routine?

The key to this is @John King @StefanKruse @mfturner et al, is to participate at your own pace. If you look through that thread in the link I posted you'll see an awful lot of catching up and skipped weeks. Many folks never finished the challenge. Some started late. Having done a 52 week challenge once, it can be a bit much when life gets in the way. Maybe two-week challenges would be better?

Yes, i was just now glancing though the other thread and it started really strong, super strong really, outstanding photos in the first lights challenge, but the last couple of pages were a little sad by comparison. So pacing and flexibility of the thread to allow catch up posts are required I think.

I have difficulties with anything that starts with "photos must be taken within ... ". I'm hopeless at that.

Also, my SWMBO is very good at saying "Can you just ... ", which can take all day. IMO that phrase ought to be banned from the language.

Two week time frame is a really good suggestion, @Brownie. That should take some of the pressure off and give folks a chance to think and get their shots together. Plus it cuts down the number of threads and overhead we have to do putting the posts together. I like it!

Well if the goal is to provide a forcing function to get people using their cameras, picking photos you've already taken in the past kind of defeats the purpose. :)

What's an "SWMBO"? That's a new one on me.

Anyway, nobody's forcing you to do anything. Participation is optional but welcome!

thanks for the replies. Keep 'em comin'!

I love the idea, @robcee. Like you, my attention has been drawn away from photography for some time. I was active in this forum years back, but have been away for a while. Lately my gear has been starting to gather dust Something like this sounds like a good way to get re-motivated.

To the concern that there may be similar threads or challenges ongoing on this forum, I say "who cares". It sounds like you've got a slightly different vision, but even if you didn't, having another series of challenges isn't going to hurt anyone.

In terms of how to manage it. I would say a single thread for each "challenge" or increment would work well. Your idea reminds me a bit of a series of non-competitive "shot-a-day" challenges that we did on this site many years back:
I share these ancient posts not to redirect your vision, but to remind what the community here can produce. Like with the Field of Dreams, "if you build it, they will come."

Yay! Glad you're interested, @DeeJayK. Love the energy.

It looks like we've got 7 people so far with at least a tentative interest in participating, so we'll see where it goes. I think I'm going to target Sunday for the first Photo Challenge for this group. Obviously, signup isn't required, but for those interested, just jump on in. I'll post a link to the challenge from this thread, so stay tuned!
