Universal Lightroom 4 OM-D E-M5 Preset by archeogeolab

Dr. Erik Meijs aka archeogeolab in the DPReview forums kindly gave me permission to share here a universal EM-5 preset for use with Lightroom 4.1 RC2 which he painstakingly created by experimentation after noting that the Olympus jpegs show reddish to orangish casts in shadow areas.

In use, I noticed that this preset imparts more "Olympus-like" color to the RAW files in Lightroom while also boosting local contrast. I also noted that it gives a similar look to my Panasonic RAW files, although it was specifically created for Olympus E-M5 files.

This preset is not meant to be the end-all-be-all of Olympus E-M5 RAW processing. Rather, it is meant to be a starting point for postprocessing images. He is planning to issue updates in the coming weeks, so take note of the version number!

The preset can be downloaded below this post as an attachment. To use it, go to the "Develop" module in Lightroom, right click on "User Presets" in the left column under "Presets", and choose "Import". After that, the preset can be applied to any individual file by selecting it in the "Presets" section, and can also be applied to a batch of files during import.

At the bottom of this post, I'm attaching a version of the preset that doesn't change the sharpening setting, because I prefer the default Lightroom sharpening settings as a staring point, especially for high ISO files.

Here a few non-artistic snaps I made with the E-M5 today (camera arrived yesterday PM) to demonstrate the effects of the preset. Each image shows the default Lightroom conversion. Mouseover for the version as rendered by the preset.

I want to reiterate that this preset is meant as a universal postprocessing starting point (not ending point) for E-M5 users, but I used it as the endpoint in these examples just to show you what the preset does:

It's a very nice touch for EM-5 owners, but it's a pity this isn't a portable custom ICC profile, therefore strictly limited to LR. Hopefully, someone will come up with a real profile for other raw processor programs.

I punched this in from DPR the other day as well for my E-P3 shots, and I must admit I'm on the fence about it. Overall color rendition strikes me as more accurate, with the pros and cons that implies. Something about the way it handles highlights relative to the overall image tone doesn't work for me though. On the other hand, it did introduce me to some LR tweaks I didn't know were possible and I'm curious to see if I can find a version that works for me.

If you have X-Rite Colorchecker Passport you can make an ICC for your exact camera. I have profiles for my 5DII and 550D but I haven't taken the time yet to make one for the EM5.

For those of us not quite lucky enough to have an EM5, is there something like this for the EPL1(and presumably the others will be tthe same)?

I made a preset to punch up my 40-150 images, but frankly I do almost nothing to the RAW files from my 45mm, and only minimally edit 20mm files.

I think I iterated now enough to say this third version is a mature preset.
It is a kind of mixture between the first and second version.
You can put this third preset-version again on mu-43.com as version:
09-05-2012.
Now I will stop working on it for a long time.
