TTL cords

    Seems most people want to go with the cheap after market TTL flash cord instead of shelling the the money for the expensive Olympus brand Hot Shoe Flash Cable (FL-CB05). I went through 3 cheap cords (less than $10.00) I got off of e-bay before I got one that worked in TTL mode, and it only worked when it wanted to, it was very unreliable. It took awhile, but i was able to track down the problem. Here is a photo of the hot shoe contacts on my E-P2, as you can see, the hot contact is much larger than the 3 smaller data contacts. Not only are the data contacts smaller, but they are also slightly recessed.

    This is a photo of the contact pins from the Olympus brand Hot Shoe Flash Cable (FL-CB05). As you can see, all the contact pins are rather small and conical, no problem fitting into the slight recess of the hot shoe and making contact.

    Here is a photo of the after market cord showing the much larger contact pins and are not conical in shape, thus preventing them making good contact.

    This photo shows the Olympus brand Hot Shoe Flash Cable (FL-CB05) mounted on the E-P2, the cord exits from the top and does not interfere with operating the lens.

    Here's the after market cord with the cord exiting the from the front and interfering with the lens.

    If there 's a positive note, the after market cord has a diode built in as to prevent damage to the camera should a flash with reverse polarity be used. The diode would prevent the flash from firing. Here's a photo of the part that has the diode.

    Since the cord is useless for reliable TTL operation, I installed the home made "safe sync" in the part of the cord. Here's the link for anyone interested in making one of their own.
