There seems to be a lot of love for this lens and I'm sure it's very nice, if you get a good one! This seems to be a typical problem with this particular lens. I took a couple of snaps to show what's happening. See how washed out the first photo is. The second one I have my hand cupped around the lens. Seems a bit wrong having to use a hood indoors!

Why would this lens have this issue? Could it be a problem with the coating or something else? I bought it from Oxfam and fortunately they have a no quibble return policy. I want a good one though as I know it's capable of producing lovely images. I have other legacy lenses and none exhibit this behaviour.
