I came across this whilst rootling about in the outbuildings behind our cottage.

I know what it is - do you? (it still works)

Taken with Panasonic GH2, 7-14mm lens and Olympus FL-36 flash.

Seeing as where you're from - is it a kilt press?

On second thoughts is it something you do to us English if you catch one of us?

Not sure what it called, but I thinking was for ironing bedding in large houses. I seem to remember the box was loaded with stone(?) to act as a press.

I think it has to do with clothes dyeing or inprinting. Or an early version of the lie detector ;)

    Spot on!

The large box is loaded with stones as weights, and the sheets were fed in under the bottom rollers. The handle is turned and the chain draws the box back and forth along the frame, rolling the rollers and pressing the sheets as it goes. It's very heavy to turn, so the staff must have had muscles!

Alternately, it's used for getting the wrinkles out of Canon lenses

And why did they need to iron sheets back then? Do people still iron sheets now? Oh I digress, lol.

The Earl (our boss) insists on them when he's up. So the wife is also now in the habit of ironing ours as well. The dog likes them, too!

Because the housekeeper told the maids that's what they had to do.

My memory wasn't playing up, can't for the life of me remember where I have one though.
