This is a photo of wildlife photojournalist Tim Laman, taking a photo of his travel kit, packed and ready for a job (the birds of paradise project in Papua New Guinea).

I know he needs it all, and there are no smaller/lighter alternatives that can do the job he requires, but, as a micro four thirds convert, I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

    Onya Tim!

You shouldn't laugh or cry. I only have a 14-42PZ as m43s lens. The rest of my lenses are Nikon F mounts. I have a Sigma 18-35 f/1.8A and as far as I know, that would be a 135 format 24-70mm f/2.8 lens in size:

And I don't find it painful to carry like that. I just have the option of leaving it at home and I keep the 50mm f1.2 with Speedbooster on there and the 14-42PZ when I feel that I will have enough light to use the zoom range at those apertures. All I will say is bring what you feel like you'll need to make the shot.

he does not need all of that :) he wants it and has a use but for sure not needed :)
curious if that is just his gear or the teams gear to ?

I know some that also go in pretty light on a personal side and have delivered the goods

    still fun to see :)

The birds of paradise series he did was incredible and included 18 trips over eight years. I'm sure he needed every bit of that gear to get the photos he did - they're unbelievable.

I counted he'd need seven of himself to shift all that!

I don't think we are just looking at photographic gear here (toiletpaper, rope?). As kit for an expedition into a wilderness with several people (count the number of back packs), I would say this looks surprisingly modest. All the same, getting on and off planes will be quite a hassle...

Well I'm not sure which parts of the gear he didn't need to take this shot:

    03-laman-focuses-on-king-bird-of-paradise-670.

Doing that in a wet, humid, steamy, windless tropical jungle, far from roads etc .....gets my maximum admiration vote.

An assistant's work is never done!

Not hard to drop a few feet and let the intervalometer tick off a few....

That is what I said how much is his assistants gear in there etc... Yes one likes a lot of gear with them ?
But you don't need it all ? You want it for whatever reasons ? Again was not a negative thing :) hahahahah

Some folks I know carry what they can on them :)

Almost would have been cooler to break it up
    Show photo gear
    Then support gear broken up
    Personal gear
    Photo support
    Like tripods etc..
Specialty gear climbing gear as example

Showing it's often all the support stuff that adds up :)
