It is basically a system to quick release/mount the camera to a suitable tripod head like an Arca-Swiss, etc. The grooves on the sides slide into the sides of the tripod head plate. Very stable, very secure, and not locking onto the camera itself. The also make all sorts of flash brackets and adapters now, but it was originally a QR plate system. They machine really nice stuff, but it commands a premium price. Used ones often sell for near-new prices on ebay, especially when for older cameras. Google "Really Right Stuff" and you'll find more. This one I like for adding just a little extra grip and weight. You can still access the battery, too. An additional side piece creates an "L" bracket so the camera can be released horizontally and re-mounted vertically instantly.

I understand the draw of RRS L-plates, but was never a fan of their bottom-only plates. For that, I'd rather just keep my tripod plate on there (as I do).
