These were shot in a nature reserve, where I lived close by and played in a lot when I was a kid:

Wife and I went up to Frankenmuth MI for the weekend. Had a pretty day Sunday, and were treated to the result of freezing fog followed by clear skies.

We have had a unusual amount of snow in my area it it's normally light and only lasts a few days, this year we have had several snowfalls and melts, this is the local church, and wife with grandchild.

Yes...not sure what architect thought mashing up a craftsman, American foursquare, and a southwestern adobe would look good, but damnit if it doesn’t.

I don't think we've had a decent fall of snow here since I took this way back in 2009.
I thought it was quite clever of the statue in our garden to equip herself with a hat, scarf and gloves to keep herself warm though.

Don Komarechka (also mentioned in the Smithsonian article) said on a podcast that he uses a drop of super glue (cyanoacrylate) to capture snowflakes and keep them from melting, and then he can photograph them indoors.
Bunch of articles on techniques:
https://www.google.com/search?q=preserve+snowflake+cyanoacrylate

So, back a few weeks ago in February when it was bitter cold and snowing i gave the superglue snowflake preservation a try. The images below are not great examples of photography (taken with an iPhone aimed at the eyepiece of a microscope) but are intended to document the success of the technique.

I’ll have to work on my skills at eliminating bubbles and broken/melting flakes but it’s still pretty cool, and the best snowflake photos I’ve ever taken when it’s 50F outside.
