- Folkert Harmens Kuipers, who was born in Akkrum (Friesland), emigrates to America in 1866 at the age of 22 and is naturalized there as Frank Cooper. He becomes a successful businessman and thus gives The American Dream a Frisian face.
In 1896, he had The Big Store built on Sixth Avenue in New York, at that time the largest department store in the world.
But Kuipers also lets his native village share in its prosperity: in 1900 he had "Coopersburg" built there, after a design by municipal architect F. Hoekstra, a home for poor elderly people. They received free room and board and a weekly allowance of six guilders.
