During our Christmas vacation to Lake Manapouri (main series here), we stopped overnight in the township of Oamaru, North Otago. It's now also known as the steampunk capital of New Zealand, thanks in part to its distinctive Victorian-style architecture.

Is it all Oamaru stone I wonder? That stuff is pretty easy to work with (I've carved it before) but it seems like it would get eroded away fairly readily.

From a website called Hamilton Bricklayers, "Oamaru stone is a premium grade limestone – the same building material that was used to create both the pyramids and buildings of ancient Rome. Limestone also is a favorite medium of sculptors."
So I guess it is hard wearing, even standing up to sand storms.

In 3 weeks time I'll meet my son in law's parents who live in this town. Wont be visiting it though.
Nice set of pics.
Looking forward to my stay in NZ.

I didn't know that about Oamaru, I enjoyed visiting a steampunk emporium in Christchurch - now looks like I need to get to the big "O" now!

While taking a shot of the wreckages of the previous post, THIS past behind my back. A Daimler in a Jaguar daydream.
Had too shoot real fast, hence the blur

Nice shots but despite perhaps having been built during Queen Victoria's reign most of those buildings are in Gothic, Italianate, or neo-classical style.

Interesting observation. They sort of advertise themselves as such, I guess they figure most people wouldn't know better.
