Last Sunday I made an excursion to Wetzlar in the state of Hessen, Germany. Here in Wetzlar was the birthplace of Leica cameras.

During the Second World War, the city was the target of heavy bombing raids, which destroyed large parts of the railroad station district and other urban districts. Fortunately, the historic old town was largely spared from the attacks, except for the cathedral.

At the square "Eisenmarkt" one of the first pictures was taken with the first 35mm camera, which can be seen here on the plaque. So you can still see the past and the present.

The old town has many picturesque places and is truly worth a visit.

The cameras of the brand Minox, once the classic camera for spies, were also produced in Wetzlar. An oversized model is a reminder of this.

In the background you can still see the old Leica production and administration building, today the headquarters of Leica Microsystems.

Today production and service are located in the Leitz-Park in Wetzlar, with museum and gallery. This will be my goal for another excursion in autumn 2020.

Ruined foundations of the former PricewaterhouseCoopers building, demolished after the Christchurch earthquakes. It's turned into a bit of an urban seagull colony since... it's been ten years - hopefully they sort it out soon.

Had a very quick walk through my home town with the intention of doing my first bit of street photography since March... ended up with mostly urban shots as there was no one about!

'Closed Projekt' (my favourite shot of the sequence... love the colours and I'm going to revisit it to try and get it with a person in it!)

Aah, the joys of Burnley. ;)
Nice to see you've still got some cobbled streets Chris.
And.....stay safe out there.

Cobbled streets in a town centre is quite unusual, I've not seen many in other towns and cities... I just try and avoid it in the car!

You sound like you have prior experience... have you been to Burnley?

Sadly not Chris.
Used to drive up to Tommy Ball's warehouse in Blackburn years ago.
Been to Skipton and also cycled all around the Forest of Bowland, based in Chipping.
I wonder why I've been all around it.... :whistling: ;)

Tommy Ball's... now there's a blast from the past! The building is still there but it's been a massive pet shop for about the last 15 years!

You're not missing much by avoiding Burnley town (something I can't avoid as my kitchen looks out over it), but the surrounding area is beautiful... Burnley borough is 8/10ths countryside and we border Yorkshire on one side (although not directly to Skipton) and Ribble Valley on the other (where Forest of Bowland and Chipping are).

Yes Chris, you're ideally placed, with lots of countryside around.
When we lived in Cheshire, it was 90 minutes to the Lakes, the Dales or Snowdonia.
Down here it takes a day to get out of Wales. ;)

The main square in the historic centre of Chur, Switzerland. Chur is the oldest town in Europe north of the Alps.
