Fabulous composition!

Thanks :) Looking back at some of my shots from that time, I just wish I had the kit I have now. Although in saying that, because that camera had a big reach I got lots of shots that I'd miss now, with having to change lenses. Of course there are compromises in everything.

I probably could revisit a lot of my images from that time, as they would fit in this thread well, and my processing skills have improved a bit too. And it would just be nice to revisit them :)

Infants and Girls School [1877/1878] - Fremantle Technical School , Western Australia - Dated Buildings and Cornerstones by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

This photograph continues my social history project documenting both the mundane and the interesting in the City of Fremantle and surrounding areas through the medium of Waymarking [see http://waymarking.com]. The image was taken in August 2016.

Whilst the Fremantle Technical School is today known as the Challenger Institute of Technology, which is in turn the South Metropolitan TAFE, it started life in 1877/1878 as the Infants and Girls School. It appears it ceased to be a school around 1904 if the information at https://fremantlestuff.info/schools/girlsschool.html is correct.

This photograph is of what was known as the Infants and Girls School.

Wetherby Film Theatre, Wetherby by Peter Bartlett ARPS EFIAP/b CPAGB BPE3*, on Flickr

Wetherby Film Theatre
Originally known as the Raby Picture House and accommodating 500 patrons this tiny cinema screened its first film in 1915.

In the late 1940s it was acquired by the Star Cinemas chain and renamed the Rodney Cinema with a reduced capacity of 260. In the early part of the 1960’s bingo was introduced part time but this was not enough to save the Rodney Cinema and it closed on 25th April 1964 with Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin in “4 for Texas” and Paul Maxwell in “Shadow of Fear”. Some years later bingo re-opened it and lasted until 1993 when the building was again shuttered.

The cinema reopened with 156 seats in July 1994 and has now returned to its original purpose with films screened every evening.

Some more from the Shanghai trip 2010.

This includes me, something I don't often do. These little stores/cafes were just on the streets in random places.

This was a green area right next to the atrium which connected the two buildings that composomised the hotel we stayed in. My nephew's wife is Mandarin and native of Shanghai, and arranged our accommodation, which was slightly out of the city, but very reasonably priced. Taxis were so cheap, being out a bit was not an issue.

Whilst the Fremantle Technical School is today known as the Challenger Institute of Technology, which is in turn the South Metropolitan TAFE, it started life in 1913 as a two-story building of brick construction in the federation Free style. It is representative of the development a technical education system for post primary aged children in Western Australia. It appears that the TAFE ceased to use the building in 2001 and in 2019 works where commenced to ready it for sale.

Shopping area close to our hotel in the suburbs: the contrast between modern and old fascinated me, and I took hundreds of photos showing the contrast.

Please forgive the distortion - didn't allow enough in the frame.

In NZ there's a general hardware chain of stores, much like Bunnings in Australia. I called this Mitre 10 :):
