Nice shot, Alex.

Let me ask you- you shoot in the Hot Springs area, right? I have always enjoyed your posts here.

There is a chance I will be in Hot Springs in the next few months. Any tips or suggestions on areas to visit to shoot? I am interested, of course, in doing some street shooting in the downtown area, but I am looking for something off the beaten path, so to speak. I am not interested in tourist areas, but more in the arts, music, and bar scene in the area. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Every lens has its strong points.

This was shot using the 14 mm focal length, this gives me great depth of field meaning that everything more than 3 ft in front of the camera is going to be in focus. This was taken when I owned the GF1, which was a great camera, a classic. Yes, it would have been better if I had looked through the viewfinder and not had the fence post blocking the woman, but I shot this from the hip as I passed their table. I have had to ask myself with lens is really best for shooting street, and the truth is that they all have their strong points. The 14 works great for when you need to shoot in tight places or as in this shot on a bright day along the sidewalk and want to make sure that the subject is in focus.

Chuck, I took a look at your website and read your Viet Nam Diary section. It was an excellent read. Great stuff.

I really need to continue with my Vietnam Diary. I had trouble with my site and posting, but it seems to be working again so I will begin posting again. I wasn't married before I shipped out, but I was dating the women I would one day marry. She kept all of my letters, and the information is coming from the letters that I wrote to her. We were the very first full Army Division to go to Vietnam, and the word SNAFU comes to mind. I was in the Quartermaster and we were in charge of supplies for our unit. We landed on the coast with 4 jeeps and 20 trucks but by the time we arrived at our post only 4 trucks made it. No the enemy didn't take them our fellow members of the Army did. I am not writing about blood and guts, but about the catch 22 nature of going to war. Those who saw heavy combat don't like to talk about it. I was originally trained for an Army Rifle Team and we won Gold in NATO matches, but by the time I made it to NAM I was a parachute rigger and never shot my rifle even though I was most likely the best shot in the division. So goes the Army. Rick thank you about your kind words about my photos, they come from having shot with a camera since 1958 when I first picked up a camera while serving with the Army in Munich Germany.

The Beach

I am still scanning old negatives, and found these I took along the S.C. beach in Garden City, S.C. One of the reasons I really like black and white is because I used to work with it in a wet darkroom and I understand it better than color. Also, I really see in b&w and when I take the photo I already am seeing how it is going to look.

<object width="700" height="487"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I0000PHx5MDq7U.I&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I0000PHx5MDq7U.I&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="700" height=“487"></embed></object>

I used to work as a stringer for two weekly newspapers. They would often use images taken along the beach.

<object width="700" height="487"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I0000FKk7CeUyRV8&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I0000FKk7CeUyRV8&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="700" height=“487"></embed></object>

I was always looking for an image that told a story in one photo and sometimes it worked and other times it didn’t.

<object width="700" height="486"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I000048zcH.2s_rw&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I000048zcH.2s_rw&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="700" height=“486"></embed></object>

Part of the time the photos just showed people having a good time at the beach. Young and old just letting the sun shine on them as they took a walk along the shore.

<object width="700" height="486"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I000009fOQgPvFJM&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I000009fOQgPvFJM&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="700" height=“486"></embed></object>

Many people love the ocean, I am one of them. I don’t get to go often today, but spend more time in the mountains of N.C. which isn’t a bad place to spend part of you summer either.

<object width="466" height="720"><param name="movie" value="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="FlashVars" value="i=I0000.gkXsrl0CE0&b=1"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.photoshelter.com/swf/imgWidget.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="true" FlashVars="i=I0000.gkXsrl0CE0&b=1" allowfullscreen="true" width="466" height=“720"></embed></object>

I have looked at over 15,000 negatives and scanned less than half of them onto my computer. I still have that many more to sort through. I have been taking photos since 1958, and that is a lot of film that I ran through my camera. All of my film was shot using Nikon cameras and lens. That equipment never let me down, once. Today, I shoot with a Panasonic G3 and Iove what we can do with the equipment that we have today.
