Took a PTO day on Friday and went downtown (Columbus). Walked approximately ten miles; explored under I-670 where there’s some unfortunate people living, caught a bit of a BLM rally, and walked along the Sciota River into Franklinton. It was a rewarding but exhausting day.

In an ally near the YMCA a few gentlemen had some questions about my photography which isn’t unusual. Ended up having a twenty minute conversation with them that culminated in them requesting I take their photo. They’re good friends but have wildly different life experiences that have led them all to becoming homeless over the past few years.

“UK” (far left) works three jobs - McDonald’s, Tee Jays, and as a painter. He’s had some legal problems in the past which made him apprehensive of my camera at first but later wanted the group photo.

In the middle is Johnny. He expressed a lot interest in my gear and whether I shoot any animal photos. He said he wanted to be a nature photographer when he younger and wished he could photograph “Bigfoot” He claimed to have found a severed Sasquatch hand as a kid but his Dad made him put it back.

Stanley, far right, didn’t disclose much about his past aside from being from West Virginia originally and dropping out of school after 8th grade. He said the YMCA is helping him a lot; he’s on a waiting list for an apartment and they’re assisting him with the medical care he requires. He tended to not look directly at the camera at any point.

I've been considering a photo project involving the homeless for a while. Not an exploitative project but a project telling their stories. I may need to give it more serious thought now.

Done right, with an emphasis on the humanity of those people, and an exploration of how they got there, a project like that could have a lot of value.

This was so much fun :)
I saw him walking towards this ramp with the desk chair on his head.
Then he put it down and raced it to the bottom :)
I have never taken a photo so fast and so pleased it came out nicely :)

Light was very low today due to tremendous smoke from forest fires raging in Washington state and blowing into Canada, therefore I shot using AF instead of zone focusing.
