Manchester was very busy last Saturday as the Olympic torch arrived. *I was out and about with my new Lumix GX1 and took the following pictures.

One of the torch legs was being completed by American/Chinese pop star Leehom Wang. *Unfortunately he didn't arrive while I was there.

It's sort of sad to see how integrated the sponsors are into something that is supposedly so "pure" as the running of the Olympic flame.

My fave is the one you've captioned "The locals look on in amazement..........or not."

The Olympic torch is coming past my window in just over a week, and I probably darned won't be here to see it. And living on the first floor I'd have an elevated view that other snappers won't have (or the chance to buy a high powered hose).

When will you Brits realize that the "first floor" is the story in which you enter a building, i.e. the floor that is on the ground. Here in the States, you can't get an elevated view until you ascend the the second floor. However you all made such a mess of our elegant language I'll never comprehend.

hmmm.. why do you think we have phrases like 'getting in on the ground floor'... or indeed rez chausee in french....

when you walk into a building it normally is an extension of the general surrounding topography... i.e. the ground floor... obviously if you invent stairs and build another floor above the ground then THAT is the first floor

and when was english ever... 'your' language... think you got it in the 1776 divorce settlement :_)

while we are at it... why do americans mark main courses on their menus as 'entres'

    baffles me

    :_)K

I knew I could get someone's goat with a little feigned American exceptionalism.

Sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread by discussions of the differences of our "two countries separated by a common language."

I'll send them a bigger image if they want but it was late and getting dark so it's ever so slightly fuzzy.
