It was quite an undertaking. First we were lodged in a decrepit hotel with broken windows and freezing night temps. Around 3 AM we were driven to a viewpoint to await the suns rising...together with hundreds and hundreds of other spectators (50% Indonesian, 50% tourists). We stood there for about 2 hours. Afterwards we were driven in a too small jeep towards the volcano in order to climb the stairs to its rim, again with thousands of other people carrying offerings to the volcano (live chickens, goats, flowers etc etc). Once on the rim You see the people throwing the offerings into the volcano...only to have them snatched by others carrying "butterfly" nets (probably to sell them again). What happened to the goat, I have no idea...
