can't argue with this... all I would say is that there is a pleasure in creating photos for an audience beyond yourself, regardless of some higher social purpose.
Not all of us have the will or dedication to take on a cause, but I know over the last couple of years have been increasingly taking photos for others... usually family and friends, sometimes other subjects like local blues musicians. I have found the process very satisfying.
Photographing for an audience to me is a major step forward in the whole process of learning photography. I tried to articulate this in this thread
Discovering an audience is the non pro way of finding a client... to a pro a client rewards with money... if your not a pro then an audience rewards in other ways
