In my search for a cheap macro solution I have decided to purchase the Teleplus MC7 2X macro. Since I own a OM 50mm F1.8 lens I have purchased the OM version. The product is the same as the Vivitar MC7.
It doubles as a 1:1 macro plus a 2X telephoto enhancer.
When using it we need to pay with 2 F-stop. The 50mm OM f/1.8 lens becomes 100mm f/3.6.
Working with this extender is very simple and focus can be achieved using the lens focus or the extender focus. I found it much better then using diopter I own, there is no limit on the working distance and the magnification can be set from 1:3 to 1:1 when working at lens minimum focus distance and 1:20 to 1:1.5 at infinity.
I did not check the 2x tele yet. I have purchased a JCPenney 135 f/2.8 that I want to test as a 570mm f/5.6 full frame equivalent tele.

Bellow is the setup picture plus a few test shots I have made all with natural light.

Nice shots, and it sounds like a useful piece of kit too.

This may be a silly question to the veterans, but those magnification ratios would be dependent on the lens attached being a 50mm, correct? I am guessing the vivitar acts as a teleconverter and focusing hellicoid/extension tube all in one.

I have the 55mm F2.8 Vivitar macro, which goes to 1:1 on its own and I really like it, but sometimes I'd like more working distance for bugs and such... Of course, I also don't want to carry around some lens that weighs a couple kilos.

I think there was a thread a while back about using this teleconverter with one of the Series 1 Vivitar 70-210mm, that yielded some pretty nice shots and sounded like a nice working distance, but it would be a relatively big and heavy combo I imagine.

Thanks, the 1:1 is with 50mm. The thread you mentioned helped me to decide to go the teleconverter.
This set as very good working distance, the bee shot was done from about 40cm. For 1:1 you need to get 12cm. But the big advantage is that unlike diopter when there is greater distance just playing with one of the focus rings set your focus.

Below is an image I shot today with the 135mm. In order to use it for tele extender there is a need for good light and steady hand. I achieved this only after using my tripod as mono-pod.

I just bought one of these teleplus 2x macro focusing converter.
I want to achieve a better combination with my Zuiko OM 300mm.
The Olympus zuiko 2x tc doesn't work well on the 300mm tele.
I remember I read somewhere that it should read tele converter, not just converter in order to work as a tele. The vivitar macro focusing reads "tele converter", but is three times more expensive. I'll find out if it works when I get it, in about 10 days from now.

For me with the 135 it works. With the 300 you will need to shoot with a tripod, even the omd ibis will have hard time to stabilize this ultra long telephoto lens. Can you check the CA that you get I found allot of it with the 135.

I've got a Kiron(1st) Series-1 that shoots a decent macro. But with the extender that's a lot of weight out in front. Some kind of tripod mount on the lens would be great. Maybe one of those strap over barrel type that screws into the body but then there is no focusing. You'd have to move it with rails or just move the tripod. Is there a better way I'm missing? Handheld is tough just with the lens. Doubling would be impossible. Just got this lens, here's some samples.

All 3 shot with the 70-210 Vivitar w/o extender and handheld.

juangrande correct me if I am wrong, but for macro it perform better then a tele-extender. To make it work with the 135mm I usually shoot using my tripod as a mono pod. The weight at the front and the long focal length make it very tough to shoot handheld.

With the 135mm, it is not near as heavy but very long. The 70-210 is huge and heavy. I know some people use the "beer can" w/ extender to get 1:1 but I don't want to mount this setup on tripod attached only to camera. That seems dangerous for the camera mount. I just won a bid for a Vivitar 90mm 2.8. If that works well ( it was sold from an estate ) I'll sell the 70-210 and extender.

I did the same, sold the 70-210 and keep the 90.

Back to the Teleplus thing, I recently got this Teleplus. I'm wondering if I put the Zuiko OM 50mm macro to this tele plus, what would be the maximum magnification?

This might be interesting, this is like putting extention tube on a macro lens. You can try out.
