Can anyone give me some tips about getting pictures OF the rain as it's falling? I've tried several things and the only thing that has worked so far is a slow shutter speed, but I really didn't want blurred motion. I feel like I'm missing something simple.....

One day I tried the same, went with all shutter speed from 1/10 to 1/500. If you go too fast you get about nothing, just small dots, too slow and again the streaks are too soft. I got best results around 1/60 - 1/100, if I remember correctly.
I think flash (rear curtain?) could help giving an accent on the drops or just freezing them.

Yeah I think rear curtain is important, otherwise the drops can look like they are travelling upwards.
