The actual supermoon is on Sunday - 5.53pm here in Thailand but about 7.00am in the US.

That is why your moon shot isnt quite 'full'.

I have a feeling it is going to be cloudy here.

    moony.

I had that feeling too... we are in rain season, this was very rare and that's why I posted tonight.

Even if it's not full moon, I believe the closest position is tonight.

You could be right but the closest the moon comes to the earth is called a 'perigee'. A 'supermoon' is a 'perigee' 'full moon' which is the closest point a full moon comes to the earth.

Sky is cloudy tonight in Lansing, Michigan, so all I saw was a bright, fuzzy blob. No photos for me, perhaps tomorrow will be better. Fingers crossed!

BTW one thing unique about a full moon is that it rises at the same time that the sunsets (because they are diametrically opposite).

So tonight is a chance to catch the moon rising in the dusk and on the horizon - weather permitting of course.

    Fighting the jello.

I grabbed my Pentax Q and a 500mm mirror lens. It's a hacked lens. It's a Telesar 500mm F8 lens that originally had a Nikon mount on it. I removed that mount and used some double sided tape to temporarily mount a MA mount on it back in my Sony DSLR days. It's been that way for years and I don't think I could even pry that mount off. Unfortunately the adapter is so big for the little Pentax Q that I can't get the quick release plate for my tripod to mount on it. So I had to hand hold these shots. Also the Pentax Q has a really slow sensor readout so it suffers from jelloing more commonly associated with video. Here are two shots. The first showing the jello effect. The second a less jellowy shot. With the crop factor of the Q, it's about a 2750mm 35mm equiv. Handheld made it difficult to focus since it's jumping around so much. Unfortunately the whole hacked up setup for the lens makes it focus past infinity.

    Jello Effect.

Mostly cloudy here in the UK too, so I went for drama rather than close up detail.

These 2 from Melbourne. It was cold, so I was lazy and took this from my front veranda with Pana 100-300mm (still not long enough):

My husband and I gave it a go last night, but it was cloudy here, too. We had to wait until the moon was significantly off the horizon before we could see it. I really wanted to catch it with some horizon in the shot for perspective.

    Gf1, Canon EF 400mm f5.6L, about a 50% crop:

I am very impressed with some of the great moon shots. I have tried a few times and getting sharp focus for me is a real chore. I just cannot seem to find the right point.

I tried again last night and the night before. Here is one from the first night with the Canon FD 200mm 2.8 lens with a Canon 2X converter mounted on my E-PM2 at f5.6. I used spot metering and a tripod. The lens focuses past infinity with this setup so I had to try and tweak the focus. The smallest of adjustments pushed it past focus in one direction of the other. This one is probably my clearest but it is still a little soft. (Even a blind hog finds a kernel of corn occasionally) Most of my shots were a little softer.

Thanks to everyone for posting the great shots.
