My favorite M42 lens in my collection. It's from 1964 and a rare eight element model. I used to shoot it on my old Pentax Spotmatic. In my much younger days I used to carry the lens in my pocket so the thorium coating would sterilize me :)

I have one, the SMC version, but it is currently in the forum Marketplace for sale amongst other lenses. It is the one I will be most sad to see go.

I gave up using my SMC Takumar 1.4 immediately upon receiving the native Oly 45/1.8. Perhaps it's time to try it again, this time with the GX1 instead of the GF1...? This thread is inspiring me!

The Tak is, and has been, my favorite lens for decades. I cannot wait until my Spotmatic is back from service so the two can be reunited again. I will shot a ton of B+W street with it.

The old glass I have works better with the Pany GX1 than it ever did on my Canons. I love how I just tap a spot on the screen, focus it, and shoot. I carry the kit lens, a prime (usually the PL25), and the Tak in my bag at all times.

Upon further review, I find my Fotodiox M-42 to μ4/3 adapter is jamming the focus ring and the aperture ring on the lens when screwed on moderately tightly. Unless I'm somehow mounting it wrong, the adapter is not right for this lens.

Watching the lens without the adapter, I see that the rear element retracts past the mounting flange when turned to the infinity focus point. That rear element is bottoming out on the adapter flange - problem.

Did I purchase the wrong adapter for this particular lens??

Sorry to borrow the thread; I'm off to do some research.

That's the adapter I'm using on the Pany...the fotodiox. I also use that brand for the eos systems too. Good stuff.

Clearances not right on this one; may have to try another one...or fugedaboutit.

EDIT: Known problem with both Fotodiox and Rainbow Imaging adapters and this particular version of the SMC Takumar lens - inadequate clearance. One person solved problem by machining the opening with a Dremel tool. No harm trying that, I suppose. Now where did I put that Dremel??

I don't have the SMC version. I have the early 8-element design.

Also have the 8 element version with a cheap adapter. Took this morning with G1. No PP. Probably the last peppers of this season. ?

Interesting stuff. I like it. You'd have to be having a bad, bad day to suffer any ill effects due to the radioactive decay of a thorium lens coating.
