I am going to be shooting our local football team tomorrow afternoon. I want to use my G3 and 14-45 for the wider angle shots when a player comes close to me. Should I use 4 fps or 40? I have a SanDisk 32gb Extreme 45 mbs card.

4 fps is fine....40fps gives a lower final resolution AFAIK
Anticipation is a better skill that a whirring camera lol!
    Have fun!

What are you going to do with the pictures? Is 4MP good enough?

I have tried the 40fps and after the 40 shots you have to wait a while whilst it records the images until you can shoot again.
you end up with virtually the same picture unless the subject is moving very fast! The image quality is ok..ish until you need to crop in a bit, then its poor.
Firing of at 4fps is as good as it gets on the GX1 its no speed demon but I have had excellent results on this setting
    Just experiment :)
