There was an article I read the other day that indicated that the camera was in fact the most essential component of for a majority of people. If you look at how people use smart phones, most of it is communicating via photos or video (both a feature of modern digital cameras).
I think the thing to take away from the chart is where the battlelines are being drawn; it's not between P&S cameras and smartphones, the smart phones have won. Nor is it between DSLRs/ILCs and smartphones, the smartphones have won that space as well. The battle will be between DSLRs and ILCs; both serve the same purpose, both produce similar quality, both provide similar performance. The differences are mainly in size and weight, what will people be seeking in future?
