Was lucky to be able to go to Snowdonia for the first time. Absolutely stunning place, could quite happily live there and be in landscape photography heaven. I will have to visit again soon, just a shame its 5 hours away.

Anyway here are some shots from the weekend. While the weather forecast was great, unfortunately Snowdonia must have its own micro climate with the clouds getting "stuck" leading to some dull light. Having said that the scenery was amazing and it was a fantastic weekend.

Great landscape photography. The last few feature posts have been top class. I read threads on here which talk about "IQ" and "DR" and leaving the system etc, then I just look at pics like these and remind myself what I already know. These systems can make better images than I can :).

On another note I also like you PP. Almost low contrast and color tweaks. Can you give us any hints how you PP?

Amazing scenery and outstanding photos! I had never heard of Snowdonia and had to google it. Now it's on my list of places I need to visit.

mate, this shot is really good. I love your rendering of the water. Probably its only an old film bugga like me who's gonna notice the nuclear blow out on the clouds ... the rest is textbook good.

I noticed it as well unfortunately it can't be saved. I could crop it out but then the focal point of the mountain is lost.

sometimes it just can't be saved even with HDRI (uneven cloud movement)

none the less its a great shot (and a little creative photoshop will touch that up if its a prize winner ;-)

Had another go at reducing the highlights. Bit of an improvement I think, but I could really do with looking into Photoshop, or at least getting more proficient with lightroom.

Thanks. I really am new to lightroom and probably only use a tiny fraction of its capabilities. Some of my shots are HDR when needed, like when shooting into direct light, so I use the new lightroom HDR function to blend usually 3 exposures. I then globally adjust the white balance. I also use the graduated filter to balance the sky and the foreground, and bring out any shadows or reduce highlights. Then I just adjust contrast a little either way. I really don't have a technique as such, just edit it to my taste, but its something I should really try to look into doing properly.

I had a shot of blown highlights in cloud and ended up doing some creative work on the "digitizer tablet" with some gentle pen work to add in something that looked right, that way I didn't stuff up the other work I'd done with the levels that worked.

When those channels blow they're often a long way from being available. That's the main beauty of Negative film ... nonlinear highlights!

Its a poor shot compared to yours but you can see the disk of the sun here.

    something related:
in my view ...: shoot with the sun over your shoulder

In the last 6 years it hasn't changed.

PS: my point is not that Negative should supplant digital but that its (in my opinion) valid to draw in texture where there was none, especially if it bring something to the shot and allows you to keep the edit that you like. Its no different to colourising ... of course National Geographic would never do such a thing...

Really nice pictures. I lived in Wales for a year and unfortunately never made it out to the countryside... A shame really.

Thanks for everyone's kind words. Encourages me to go to other locations further away than just my local patch (which luckily is also pretty nice).
