I have been trying the slow motion setting menu on the gh3. So far when I play back footage recorded at 80% slow it does not look like it is slowing down at all. When I set it to do fast motion it is definitely doing fast motion. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong??

Ok I got it figured out. It was operator failure. :)

Is the slo-mo setting in the camera more beneficial for people who don't know how to do this in post? I just can't see the benefit of locking footage to slo-mo, over doing it in post with so many more options.

The slo-mo feature captures more frames per second, giving you the ability to dial the speed down without losing as much quality. For example, if you are set to film in 24fps, the slo-mo feature can take you to 48 or 60fps so you have a lot more to work with when you get to post.
