    Quick shutter sound/burst mode comparison:

The E-M5 isn't half bad, but I'm really, really looking forward to an electronic shutter on my next camera.

The Olympus cameras have, to my ear, a more pleasing sound. Perhaps more bass/more "muted"?

    Thanks, Amin.

  4. Even ignoring the differences in shutter sound, the high speed shutter on the E-M5 is mental! I wound mine back to about 5fps to avoid unnecessary shutter releases if my finger lingered on the shutter button for a fraction of a second too long.

The Panasonic shutters definitely have more a "clack" to them.

The OMD has one of the nicer shutter sounds I've ever heard in interchangeable lens cameras apart from Nikons "silent" mode.

Of course, the RX100 is the best in the test :)

I want one of those CSI camera shutter sounds.

Always sounds like an old time flash bar loaded with gun powder going off.

Of course, they only use Nikons...

And in the early shows you can hear the motorized film advance...when they're using a digital camera...

But that shutter sound...just the thing for concerts or street photography.

This. Not only for being quiet, but I want high speed sync. But with that said, I don't think we'll see it for at least a couple of generations. Even then, it'll be a first gen product.

I thought the E-PM2 had the most pleasing sound.

that Sony is SWEEEEET sounding....just a whisper. The Pansonics sound like my mom's old 50s typewriter, where the Oly's sound more like the 70s/80s IBM electrics typewriters we had in school. Of course, there's a bunch of youngsters on here that don't even know what a typewriter is.

    Thanks for the comparison!
Question: which, if any, lenses were mounted on the cameras?

Thanks Amin. I like that E-M5 sound - kind of reminds me of the sound my dad's old camera used to make. I don't know what brand that is.

But yes - the RX100 does "sound" nice.

I don't remember, but all were set to manual focus, manual exposure, and 1/100s exposures.

I like it too. Reminds me a bit of my OM-2n - much more muted than the Nikon FM2N. After the E-M5, the GX1 and E-PM2 sounds are a tie for me. The Pen is a bit more muted, but I like the crispness of the GX1.

My question is where is the microphone located for this test? Bottom line is do these sounds exemplify or exaggerate the sound produced by the cameras. I know that the relative location of the camera to the microphone can have a great affect on the sound particularly when the microphone is close.

In your opinion does this video fairly represent the differences as heard by third party listening from a distance, particularly with respect to loudness.

I had a 30D that scared birds it had such a loud shutter, not that I'm partial to birds but it alarmed people too. So I like this topic and am really interested.

And I applaud this effort:2thumbs:as well as your IBIS tests...thanks a lot.

Was the IBIS turned off for the test in Olympus cameras? I noticed that my E-P1 has different shutter sound with IBIS off.

The E-PM2 has a great sound. Hardly quiet, however. Thanks for your work, Amin.

It depends on the volume, but I think it's fairly representative if you keep the volume sufficiently low.
