I came across this video which reassigned the AF lock from the shutter half way press to another button on the back. (about 3:40 when he demonstrates it)

    http://nikonrumors.com/2014/01/25/how-to-use-nikons-af-on-and-back-button-autofocus.aspx/

(note: AF is auto focus, MF is manual focus)
I thought the E-M5 half way press for AF Lock was permanent, so had Fn1 as MF. I'd press shutter half way to AF lock then sometimes press Fn1 (as MF) to disengage any further focus attempt by the camera.

After watching this video I checked E-M5 menu settings and came up with this:
(note: I still use S-AF and not C-AF as mentioned to use in the video) (Fn1 is small, but using thumb tip works ok.)

For AF Lock At Fn1: (E-M5)
    Menu
    3 down to Gears
    > AF/MF
    > AEL/AFL
    > S-AF
mode3 (AEL Exposure only on shutter button)
    Ok
    < (back to gears menu)
    select Button Dial
    > Button Function
    > Fn1 (can also be Fn2 or Rec button(s) but they aren't in back)
    > AEL/AFL
    Ok
press Shutter Button or Menu to end - get back to live view.

    To Undo It
For Shutter Half Way Focus Lock: (default (E-M5))
    Menu
    3 Down to Gears
    > AF/MF
    > AEL/AFL
    > S-AF
mode2 or mode1 (default AF half way on shutter button)
    Ok
    < (back to gears menu)
    Button Dial
    > Button Function
    > Fn1
    > MF (or other function)
    Ok
    press Shutter Button or Menu
