We are now climbing up into the Minente Valley, approximately 6.5 kilometres out of Florac. This was a lovely walking, and the ascent was not that noticeable (well I do not recall it being noticeable).

This is the wonderfully-named Pont Spwdwr (or Spudder's Bridge) in Carmarthenshire.
Recognised as being the oldest bridge in South Wales, dating from the late 15th century, it has been designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
It comprises six arches, two over the River Gwendraeth and four over the adjoining floodplain. The piers are known as 'pointed cutwaters' and the diamond shape (as seen from above) provides refuges along the length of the bridge.

That's an impressive structure and design.
I'm surprised they allow the ivy to take hold on something so precious.

As a Scheduled Ancient Monument, it would be given regular inspections, but, as with most things these days, certain council and municipal restrictions are in place due to Covid limitations, including cutbacks on (ivy) cutbacks.
I'm sure it will be well looked after and might still be around in another 600 years.
I'll let you know.

Ponts or bridges were common on our climb through the Minente Valley. This one was across the La Minente river where the D20 and the GR70 crosses the river

This is the Cleddau bridge, (crossing the river of that name) between Neyland and Pembroke Dock.
Prior to its completion there was a choice of a small ferry service or a 28 mile road journey.
The bridge was completed in 1975 but came at some cost, as part of it collapsed during construction in 1970, leading to the loss of four lives.

A non-descript bridge over the River Vorma, at Sundet in Eidsvoll municipality, Norway. I like the offset form of it.

Since Romans never bothered here the oldest bridge still in regular use near my home is from the 1770's. It's built entirely without mortar by wedging granite blocks together which might be the reason why it's still standing in this climate.
