I know of at least one other bridge where they housed prisoners...

Nothing as sinister (that door is about 2 feet high).

It's a cavity for storing planks to drop into slots in the bank to block off the canal if it needs to be drained. I'll look for the slots next time I'm there.

I wish I had taken a closer look when we were there a couple of years ago, but we only had time for a quick wander down to the river, on our way to Crieff. This photo taken on my old Lumix TZ25.

Looks like you were on the Dunkeld side near the cathedral. Just opposite from my photo above.

Damn, we cycled to Dunster a couple of years ago when staying in Exmoor.
We walked down through the castle estate to watch the annual archery shoot, bit didn't see any bridges.
Apart from this old packhorse bridge, just outside the estate.

Now I missed that one. This was our first visit to Dunster (it wasn't a planned visit either, our weekend arrangements have been completely changed by the Coronavirus outbreak) but what a beautiful little village it is. The weather wasn't great, but at least the rain held off throughout our time there. I'm sure we'll return at some point.
