Kinzie Street Railroad Bridge over the Chicago River in downtownChicago. The bridge has been unused since the 1960's and it is left in the upright position. Once a year they exercise the bridge and lower it to the down position.

Braved the miserable weather for a short walk in between shopping this afternoon.

This is a canal bridge which carries Sutton Road over the Birmingham & Fazeley Canal at Mile Oak, Staffs.

It seems pretty unremarkable except for a barred window on one side. When I googled it though, I found it's been standing since 1787 and is protected by English Heritage. Hundreds of cars and lorries rumble over this bridge 24/7.

I know of at least one other bridge where they housed prisoners...
Nothing as sinister (that door is about 2 feet high).

It's a cavity for storing planks to drop into slots in the bank to block off the canal if it needs to be drained. I'll look for the slots next time I'm there.

Thomas Telford Bridge over the River Tay at Dunkeld. We were told that they housed prisoners in the little room under the bridge. I didn't get a photo of the door just the window on this side.

I wish I had taken a closer look when we were there a couple of years ago, but we only had time for a quick wander down to the river, on our way to Crieff. This photo taken on my old Lumix TZ25.

Looks like you were on the Dunkeld side near the cathedral. Just opposite from my photo above.
