A Hike at 9500 ft.

went for a short hike to some beaver ponds at 9,500 ft. on Monday, about 1.2 miles out and back. it is a little early for a lot of wildflowers at that altitude but I managed to see about 20 different species blooming. In my mercy I will not share all but some of those that others have not shared recently. The Canada Violet was in full bloom and even though this is central Colorado they seemed right at home. All photos with the Pany G9 and the venerable Tamron 90mm F2.5

There were two of the yellow composites blooming. In the Fall there may be 15-20 different yellows in flower.

At lower altitudes Utah Serviceberry reigns at this altitude it is the Serviceberry (different leaf shape). Note the frost damage most of the flowers were seriously damaged.

One of the prettiest groups of flowers are the Jacob's Ladders this is the Leafy Jacob's Ladder.

Scarlet Gila is ubiquitous in this area. I had never noticed it in bud, quite attractive.

I'll end with a little puzzle I could use some help on. I photographed some ferns and when I processed them in notice some dark spots on the leaves. On closer examination the were shadows of tiny white objects held on thin filaments above the leaf surface. Often they were very out of focus while their shadow has sharp. I thought at first they might be reproductive elements but now I think they may be insect larva or parasites. I have included a 100% crop of the photo.

Rainy walk at Nisku Prairie accompanied by omnipresent mosquitos. I also inadvertently kneeled in an ant colony while shooting, but I didn't realize until the first bite on my neck! I spent the next five minutes dancing about trying to rid myself of the swarm.
