This is my first attempt at a panorama shot, taken with my E-PL1 and the Panasonic 20/1.7. The view is over the western part of Gothenburg.

Handheld EPM1 + 45mm 1.8, ISO 200, F8, EV 0, AWB, various shutter speeds. Two rows, 15 landscape oriented shots, stitched with Hugin:

White Mountains, scenic overlook in Intervale, NH. (Believe it or not, you can park about 10 feet from where I stood to take this photo. It's right off highway 16/302.)

Right after thunder and the thundershower I went out with my, well, date is the official term, and took a walk, and ended up by this small lake. Handheld E-PL1 + 20/1.7, ISO 200, f/6,3, 1/40 s. I would have wanted a deeper depth of field, but had to make a trade-off over noise. Will go there some other time with my tripod and do this the right way!

Gigapans...

<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/105175/options/nosnapshots,hidecontrols/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe>Ha! The embed code works! :)

You can use the control over on the left to zoom in. These are thumbnails, the detail can be overwhelming. I did a 30x40 inch print of Manhattan for my daughter (around 150MB file size as TIFF), printed at 300 dpi (I had to persuade the lab to print it at that size, rather than the standard 72 dpi!), and it looked like a contact print from a large format negative. This really, really, really works well. :)

If you really want to get serious about panoramas, I highly recommend the Gigapan system of robotic tripod heads (disclaimer: satisfied customer with no connection to Gigapan, Google, CMU or NASA, whereby I really regret the last...). They make extremely large-scale panoramas very, very simple.

<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/55479/options/nosnapshots,hidecontrols/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe>
Using it is simplicity itself: you set up your tripod, center it, mount the gigapan unit of choice (I use the Gigapan Pro), check the centering (level is mounted on the body), attach camera and lens of choice, center these, then connect the sync cord from camera to gigapan head. Turn on unit, turn on camera. Show the system your field of view so it knows how long your lens is (place horizon on bottom of viewfinder, set, place horizon on top of viewfinder, set, done), set your camera up (manual exposure, manual focus, no flash, constant WB, turn off any dynamic exposure extensions in camera software, set ISO, set focus, set aperature and shutter speed, test and verify), then start a new panorama: use the controls to move the gigapan/camera combo to the top upper right of the composition, set, then move to the lower left of the composition, set.

You can then see how many rows and columns you'll be taking. Start your panorama and step back. The unit moves to the starting position by itself, starts taking individual pictures and continues through all rows and columns until it has reached the last photo.

Stitch via the Gigapan Stitcher, which also puts it online for your perusal.

You don't have to just take panoramas with it...

<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/71558/options/nosnapshots,hidetitle/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe>

<iframe src="http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/55449/options/nosnapshots,hidetitle/iframe/flash.html" frameborder="0" height="400" scrolling="no" width="100%"></iframe>

I'll stop here because I've got over 100 of these.

Pop over to Gigapan.org and search on my user name. Not all are that great, but I'm having fun doing them. :)
