Phil, image number 3 was of M. Raonic, a Jamaican born Canadian. The image was shot from my seat which was essentially 1/2 way up the seating and he was at the far end of the court. The image is about a 50% crop and Ive attached the full frame for interest. The P45-175 is a great lens and very sharp even at 175mm and wide open. Image captured at 1/800 sec, ISO 640 and f5.6. Have a great number of images of him due to his dreadlocks.

quote "Stunning Allan, loved shoot 3, was that RLA and you look like you were low down?

Ice Hockey Day

A few shots from my first ice hockey game attended earlier this month, Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League, Adelaide Rush at home to Brisbane Goannas.

From a technical point of view, the interesting thing about this series is the choice of lens. It was pretty dim in there: being a very minor sport here, no big dollars on fancy venue lights. So I used my Olympus 75mm/1.8 at all times, wide open at all times. Furthermore, for about half the photos I used the Olympus TCON-17X front teleconverter. This makes the lens 127.5mm while still retaining the f/1.8 maximum aperture. So, I was getting the crop of a 255mm full frame lens and the shutter speed/ISO combinations of an f/1.8 lens. I was able to shoot at 1/320s and ISO 800 and 1600, where with my P100-300 at 100mm f/4 I would have needed ISO 8000 (and if I zoomed to 200+mm, I would have needed ISO 16,000).

Some of the photos were manual focus, because I was sometimes behind the spectator protection rope netting. Focus peaking worked well, also with the TCON. At other times AF worked well, and with TCON too. I used S-AF and low speed burst 5 fps on my E-M5II. I was pleased with how much success I was able to have with these settings, considering that I generally avoid C-AF with this camera. I didn't really miss it.

This one shows the rope netting. Others didn't.

They say that some people love that job. No amount of gear is enough IMO!

This would have been with the TCON (also some others)

We scored but the fightback was too late.

I had lunch with a couple of players afterwards including the home team goallie. All very nice.

The local enforcer

Anyway, moral of the story is that my gear was fun to use and gave me some results that I don't mind. In particular, sports in dim light without using a big sensor or C-AF.

RLA? Sorry Phil - don't understand.

Rod Laver Arena = RLA :)
Just looked at the uncropped version and the blue seats aren't right for RLA :) we largely parked yourselves in Hisense. Like Raonic but didn't get to see him play..... that 175mm gives nice reach, i did notice the extra 50mm when i threw the 50-200 on for a little bit... the more i think about it I'd pay serious money for a m43 200mm prime with F1.8 just to get into the FOV and nearly the DOF as the legendary canon 400mmF2.8 the pros had court side

Damn TN beat me to it :)

Those South Aussies are faster than you think!
I admitted that I was tempted to take the 100-400mm - would have been perfect but settled on the P45-175 as I know it performs and was permitted under the rules. Also it doesn't trombone.
Yes the extra reach of a 200mm would have been good from where I was but a 400mm at f2.8 would be a monster and need a monopod.
We are so lucky to have the choice of great system glass in m43 - so many choices.

Some Tae Kwan Do photos from the NZ Nationals in Christchurch in July 2015. All taken with 12-40 Pro, the f2.8 aperture was a real help in the dim lighting than all such venues offer ... virtually all were pre-focused

You really don't get to see many broken rackets at the tennis in person and this little sequence was out of the blue and i nearly missed it... I did miss the first hit but thought i did well to capture the rest :) There are a couple of extras in the album on flickr
This was one sequence were the CAF-Tr lost the target in the middle of the sequence..... should have just stopped it after i got initial focus as there was no real change in distance

How about a couple from a women's match EM1mk2 and the 4/3 50-200 at max reach i think for all three

Just after the racket hit the ball, you can see (just) the fluff from the ball in the air
