This is a very old Parish Boundary sign I spotted when cycling past, near Greystoke in the Lake District.

I doubt whether the damage was caused by a dispute between those lovely Cumbrian fell-folk.
More likely by a council contractor smashing the hedges to bits with their mechanical equipment. :(
I meant having the border at all, Brian, not the damage to the sign ... ;) :( .

There's something very wrong with our species ... :( :shakehead: .
We just love making little satrapies with walls around them, and a high priest (council officer, whatever) at its head.

Ah, sorry for my misinterpretation John.
I'd never really considered it, as we're virtually programmed from birth about borders and boundaries.
Cot, playpen, room, house, garden, village............
No wonder we're such a protective species.

South Side of the Railway Cutting – JWR #005 by Andrew Priest, on Flickr

I was following an abandon railway form when it passed through a cutting. On either side of the cutting were two signs referencing geological forms. It appears that the signs were once enclosed, but as to their purpose here, it remains unclear.
Andrew, is it a problem that I understand what that sign means ... ?
