Hospitals of this kind were originally an institution of the Church for the reception of travelers, merchants, pilgrims and others. Later on, all kinds of guest houses arose, with the reception of the elderly and the sick being the most important form.

This is one of life's real mysteries.
As if the signs themselves weren't confusing enough.
We'd cycled (in from the left) from Llanidloes and wanted to head back there to our motorhome.
However, to take this shot, I was stood in the middle of a T-junction, with my back to another road.
And that's the (unsigned) one we took, to Llanidloes.........8 miles away.
