Some ten miles further downstream, the River Teifi divides Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion (formerly Cardiganshire) as it winds its way into Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea. On the Pembrokeshire bank is the large village of St.Dogmaels. Here there is a statue of a mermaid, recalling the tale of a local fisherman, Peregrine, who managed to capture her in his net one day. The mermaid was so upset at being caught that she begged Peregrine to let her go, but he only did so after she promised to give him three warning shouts if his life was ever in danger.
Some time later when out fishing, he heard the shouts of "Peregrine, Peregrine, Peregrine, take up your nets and go, take up your nets, take up your nets".
Peregrine did as he was told and returned safely to his home. Shortly after, the sky blackened and a terrible storm arose, killing many local fishermen that day, but Peregrine was saved by the mermaid's warning.

Last year there was a dam in the spot I was standing on today when I took this picture, one of several dams that have been removed to restore the natural flow of the Boardman River in Traverse City, Michigan. A long trail system that follows the river I will have to make a point to explore over the upcoming summer months. Parts of this river are quite intimidating from a rapids perspective with steep banks you wouldn't want to lose your footing on, unless you want to swim with the fishes. This section has basically been restored to a flood plain.

Yes, the 'fish ladder' was provided a few years ago.
The building is Pembrokeshire's County Hall and although it's a big improvement on the old concrete carbuncle, there was a lot of resentment when it was located on a prime site on the riverside, rather than using the area for recreation and making it an attractive area for visitors.
