The Sheepherders Monuments.

Rock structures of a different kind. For ~20 years, a solitary sheepherder, Lorenzo Larsen, roamed the mountains around Fish Lake, Utah. While tending his sheep, he started creating rock structures to pass time. This was in the 1940's - 1960's and not many people were aware of his creative activity although he created hundreds of structures. Most have started crumbling with the passage of time. These photos capture most of what are left on this mountainside. If you would like to know more about Lorenzo, there is an article in "Desert Magazine, May 1966" which can be Googled.

These photos were taken in a light shower and erratic light as a fast moving storm cloud passed through.

Those are really amazing, I am surprised they are still standing. That Desert Magazine is a real blast from the past, even the adds are interesting.

"You raise the blade, you make the change, you rearrange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door and throw away the key, there's someone in my head but it's not me."

This head cast in metal is inside an upright stone (like looking out of some room which it is locked in). It stands in the park of the local psychiatric clinic. The words are from the song "Brain Damage" of Pink Floyd's superb album "Dark Side of the Moon". I think the artist captured in a stunning way the emptiness and suffering of the persons trying to find help there. And the lyrics show in a very poetic way the basic anxiety as to treatments, be it the cutting of the bridge between the two halves of the brain or the effects of all kinds of drugs used in these institutions.

And the next line is “You lock the door”, I was asking if you meant me, or some other you. I think Floyd lyrics are permanently etched in my cerebral hard drive.
