No idea. Walked into a coffee house and it was setting just as is. Based on the location of the pieces it looks like some kid was just setting them on random squares.

@Lupin 3rd -Since you brought it up, this is in the same general area of California. It's barren and enormously isolated. Endless hours of driving at 85-90MPH, I might see 3-4 vehicles per hour coming towards me. I don't recall exactly location but within an hour from The message is the medium i. Perhaps humans have a primate need to mark on their environment, to stake out their territory, and express their creativity. Later on I'll post more images from this particularly amazing day.
