Sunshine hours recorder

This is the sunshine hours recorder at the met station at Slapton Ley Field Centre

Thankfully today it actually had a job to do, we had some sunshine

Brady, I have a somewhat sketchy idea. The suns rays are focused to a point by the glass globe. A light sensitive paper is laid around behind the globe, you can see writing on the back of the paper on the bit sticking out on the left. I guess the light sensitive paper is black and you can see vertical marks on it which would represent each hour of the day. As the sun moves round during the day it will burn a line on the paper when it isn't obscured by cloud.
At the end of each day someone has to collect the paper and then measure the length of each bit of the line to see how many hours sunshine there was during the day.
I hope that makes sense.

(TI made Micro-Sparc @50 MHz - yes, mega, not giga - from a dusty old Sun SparcStation LX / Note the hardware hack on the right hand soldering of the chip, with 2 pins torn off - this isn't a defect nor an accident, the computer actually works like that)

I thought I had posted this, but it appears to have disappeared.
I know it wasn't taken with a m4/3 camera...but, that's not entirely required, right?

These are dent removal balls for brass musical instrument repair.

More meters. I thought I liked the one with fewer, but then I printed them both 8-10ish, and like this one better in print. I haven't made more than a 5x7 print in a long time. My wife is probably getting tired of hearing me say so, but this little camera has really brought the joy of photography back to me.

The meters will find a place on the wall for a while near the "sculpture" pictured below. It's a hand-carved foundry blank (or plug?) for making molds. Some of you on this board will surely know more about this than I do. A local artist in Kalamazoo, MI, bought up truckloads of all different kinds of these from a closed factory in town. He paints them with subtle washes. Some of them are larger and more intricate than this one.

a Sunshine recorder is brilliantly simple. A ball of glass, about 4 or 5" diameter is set up facing due South with a card curved behind it on the North face. Just like kids with a magnifier zapping ants in the garden, when the sun shines the card gets burned (charred at least). And, in the same manner as a sundial, the time at which the sun was out can be recorded. The card can be marked quite accurately to record the actual time the sun shone.

You can't beat old tech.
